Job Description:
Our Ottawa based client is seeking an HP/UX and Linux Support Specialist for a contract position.

General Functions:
As part of the Infrastructure Technology and Electronic Messaging Services (ITEMS) support group, provides system installation and maintenance, problem analysis and recovery, performance management, security management, documentation and disaster recovery support services relating to TC-managed HP/UNIX and Linux servers.

The environment consists of twenty-six HP/UX servers (comprised of 6 HP Serviceguard Clusters and 9 standalone), eleven Redhat Linux Servers (6 Physical and 5 VMs), and one Sun Solaris Server. These servers primarily provide a database environment to the approximately 64 production instances and 106 acceptance/development instances and also as a platform for our data protection infrastructure, and SAS ITRM. Server models include HP RP7400(3), HP RP7420(3) HP RP 5470(5), HP RX 6600(9), HP RX7640(4), HP RP 4410(2), HP Proliant DL (6) and VMWARE VM(5).

Activities and Responsibilities:

1) System Installation, Integration and Maintenance
• Provide advice on hardware technical specifications – hardware and environmental
• Perform systems management procedures using TC tools (problem, change, etc.)
• Coordinate with vendors to install and configure hardware
• Configure OS and prepare server for use (i.e. kernel tuning, installing standard scripts, disaster recovery image/media creation, etc.)
• Prepare standardized procedures and documentation for server installs, migration and consolidation
• Review patches and documentation and apply patches as appropriate
• Evaluate, test and install new software
• Verify system functionality
• Develop scripts to automate above tasks where appropriate
• Plan server upgrades, migrations and relocations
• Prepare/maintain comprehensive documentation relating to above activities

2) Problem Analysis and Recovery
• Coordinate with HP and other vendors for hardware service when required
• Proactively monitor infrastructure to preempt potential problems
• Research failures and vulnerabilities via appropriate methods (internet, etc.)
• Apply updates as appropriate and document

3) Performance Management
• Review and analyze performance data: trending and usage patterns
• Manage resource (disk/memory/CPU) utilization and logs
• Investigate abnormalities – apply changes where appropriate

4) Security Management
• Review security logs
• Maintain infrastructure security based on best practices for Unix servers
• Verify patch levels and ensure vulnerabilities are addressed

5) Disaster Recovery
• Maintain disaster recovery backup tapes etc.
• Maintain disaster recovery plans

6) Backup Resource for Other Areas
• Perform Unix/Linux administration duties in the absence of the Unix/Linux Technical Coordinator
• Perform Unix/Linux backup and restore duties in the absence of the Enterprise Data Protection Administrator (Backup Administrator)

The ideal candidate will have::
  • proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • proficiency in HP Serviceguard Cluster (or other Unix cluster) technology
  • Unix Administrator Certification from a recognized certification body
  • proficiency in scripting and task automation
  • proficiency in securing and hardening Unix Servers
  • proficiency in Microsoft Visio
  • proficiency in Tivoli Service Desk or HP Service Manager (an asset)
  • proficiency in RDIMS (an asset)
  • knowledge of Oracle Database Servers (configuration and pre-installation) would be considered an asset
  • knowledge of Enterprise Data protection software (such as CommVault or Netbackup) would be considered an asset
