Job Description:
Our Ottawa based client is seeking an Enterprise Data Protection Support Specialist (Backup Administrator) for a contract position.

General Function:
As part of the Infrastructure Technology and Electronic Messaging Services (ITEMS) support group, provides enterprise data protection support services including: backups, restores, vaulting, media cataloging, documentation, maintaining the backup infrastructure, and disaster recovery planning and processes for the department’s server infrastructure.

The environment, running CommVaults Simpana 8, consists of one CommServe Server (Windows 2008 Server), two Media Agents (Linux/HP-UX), four VCB Proxy Media Agents (Windows 2008 Server), two HP MSL 6060 Libraries (with 8 LTO- 3 drives each), one HP MSL 4048 Tape Library (with 2 FC LTO-3 drives), and two Hitachi ProtecTIER VTL Appliances distributed between the two main data centers.

Activities and Responsibilities:

1) Monitoring and maintenance of all backup infrastructure: servers, tape libraries, media etc.
• Monitor tape libraries to ensure availability of backup media
• Monitor Backup/Restore jobs to ensure success
• Track all failed jobs and coordinate with vendors to resolve
• Ensure Vault jobs (for Off-site copies) are completed and media shipped to alternate site
• Maintain an accurate inventory of ALL media and infrastructure resources
• Maintain updated documentation processes and procedures
• Monitor Commcell reports and health-check and resolve any issues arising
• Perform systems management procedures using TC tools (problem, change, etc.)
• Coordinate with vendors to install and configure software/hardware
• Administer the addition/removal of backup clients
• Review patches and documentation and apply patches as appropriate
• Evaluate, test and install new software in lab environment
• Monitor and verify overall system functionality
• Develop scripts to automate above tasks where appropriate
• Document and maintain statistics on environment and investigate anomalies

2) Problem Analysis and Recovery
• Coordinate with HP, CommVault, and other vendors service when required
• Proactively monitor infrastructure to preempt potential problems
• Research and document root cause of failures

3) Performance Management
• Review and analyze performance data: trending and usage patterns
• Manage resource (LTO media, VTL disk capacity) utilization
• Investigate abnormalities – recommend changes where appropriate

4) Security Management
• Maintain infrastructure security based on best practices for backups and media
• Verify patch levels and ensure vulnerabilities are addressed

5) Disaster Recovery
• Maintain disaster recovery backup tapes etc.
• Maintain disaster recovery plans

The ideal candidate will have::
  • proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • proficiency in CommVault or Netbackup Enterprise Data Protection systems
  • proficiency in cataloguing and maintaining Backup Media
  • proficiency in Windows OS and experience with Linux/Unix OS
  • experience with Enterprise grade Libraries: HP MSL 6060, Hitachi Diligent VTL
  • ITIL certification
  • proficiency in Tivoli Service Desk or HP Service Manager (an asset)
  • proficiency in RDIMS (Records Documents and Information Management System) is considered an asset
  • knowledge of scripting and automating processes
